The hope is that companies and individuals engage in philanthropic efforts for their own sake in the pursuit of creating a better world in which to live. And that certainly is a great place to start and reward enough; however, the fact is such endeavors for a business typically results in happier, more fulfilled employees and a groundswell of communal goodwill for the commercial enterprise as well.

Was a time when promotional items were pretty much a standard practice for most companies. Not so much anymore as the novelty appeal of coffee mugs and pens has lost its luster, and the recession has made the expenditure of much beyond that prohibitive to many operators.

It’s rare the company places ads in publications, but when it does, the goal is not to use scare tactics to attract potential customers. In the time since the inaugural SAMMY Award prize was bestowed one evening in 1995, a select few companies have distinguished themselves as perennial finalists, while fewer still have taken home multiple trophies in the same year. For the second year in a row, HSM left SSI’s SAMMY (Sales and Marketing) Awards banquet with the most hardware, including the top prize of “Overall Integrated Marketing Program.”

It was standing room only. Calls were made and more chairs were brought in, but most of those who attended Security Sales & Integration’s 9th annual Sales and Marketing (SAMMY) Awards didn’t notice: With an anticipatory buzz in the air, they were too busy mingling over hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, meeting their peers and swapping marketing secrets to worry about finding seats.

The COMM Group of Pittsburgh and Greater Alarm of Irvine, Calif., were the big winners at Security Sales & Integration’s 9th annual Sales and Marketing (SAMMY) Awards gala. The two contractors won the grand prize awards in the March 30 ceremony at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas.

They say it doesn’t matter where visitors stay in Las Vegas. After all, between the gambling, live shows and endless buffets, tourists don’t spend much time sleeping. And considering the International Security Conference’s (ISC) almost 700 exhibition booths, awards presentations, association meetings, social events and contests, the same could be said for security industry insiders attending the annual conference in Las Vegas from March 30 to April 2.

The effects of 9/11 continue to impact businesses across the country, as security upgrades are being done in buildings large and small. But right after the terrorist attacks, major landmark locations like the Sears Tower, the tallest building in the United States for 30 years, had to be additionally secured as soon as possible.
